Chicken Pox

When someone has already suffered from chickenpox, the patient will have immunity to chickenpox for the entire of life. But, reactivation of latent Varicella-zoster virus in adulthood results in herpes zoster. The virus may infect the dorsal root ganglia during chickenpox, where it remains latent until reactivated. Herpes zoster patients can transmit the virus to other persons as chickenpox.

Medication is not necessary for few skin lesions. Antiviral (acyclovir) therapy may be of benefit to children <12><24 style=""> for 5-7 days is recommended. Cream containing antivirus may be given topically on skin lesions.

Varicella vaccine is recommended for administration to all immunocompetent children and adults at risk of infection. It is only given once in a lifetime, at anytime. But, Indonesia Pediatrician Association suggests giving this immunization at age 12. A few children who have already gotten the vaccine may suffer from chickenpox, but the illness usually benign and the healing of the disease is faster.
