Calcium for Children

Calcium is an important nutrient, especially for children. It is the main mineral that strengthens bones and teeth. Calcium deficiency in children can result rickets. Later in life, it can result osteoporosis which then can lead to fragile bones and an increased risk of fractures. During childhood and adolescence, the body uses the mineral calcium to build strong bones. Bone calcium begins to decrease in young adulthood and progressive loss of bone occurs as we age, especially in women.

Children ages 1-3 need 500 mgs calcium per day, children ages 4-8 need 800 mgs per day, and children ages 9-18 need 1300 mgs calcium per day to build their growing bones.

Calcium also play important role in muscle contraction, transmitting messages through nerves, and the release of hormones. Calcium work together with vitamin D and phosphorus in the body to reach calcium level which is needed by your body. If calcium levels in the body are low, calcium will be took from bones.

Milk and dairy products are main sources of calcium. They also contain vitamin D which is also important for bone. Calcium can also be found in sardines, nuts (such as almonds), and leafy green vegetables (broccoli, spinach). Breast milk and infant formulas are the main source of calcium for children under one year of age.
